Las Vegas Landscape Design That Starts With a Plan

Landscape design in Las Vegas is not simply selecting plants and placing pavers. Legacy Outdoor Living has spent 24 years reading Las Vegas lots, decoding caliche soil layers, and building outdoor spaces that hold up through 115-degree summers and the occasional monsoon surge. We hold NV contractor licenses #0092251 and #0094033, covering both landscape and masonry work, which means the Master Plan we draw and the structure we build are accountable to one team from the first site visit to the final walkthrough. If you're comparing contractors, call (702) 508-1226 and ask what licenses they carry.

A well-executed landscape design begins with a formal site analysis: we evaluate existing topography, drainage patterns, sun exposure, and any hardscape or pool features already in place before a single plant is specced. That analysis is what separates a Master Plan from a mood board. Cost varies considerably depending on lot size, scope of hardscape installation, irrigation integration, and whether the project runs through an HOA approval process. Every job is different. Contact Legacy Outdoor Living for an accurate estimate.

Our Process

How the Design-Build Process Works

  1. 01

    Site Analysis

We walk the property and evaluate topography, drainage, soil conditions, existing structures, and sun orientation. Las Vegas lots in North Las Vegas behave differently from sloped Henderson pads, and we account for that before the design phase opens.

  2. 02

    Master Plan Development

We translate the site data into a structured Master Plan: hardscape layout, planting zones, drip irrigation placement, drainage routing, and material specifications. You see the full picture before any work begins.

  3. 03

    Installation and Accountability

Our crews execute the plan. Because design and construction stay under one roof, there's no gap between what was drawn and what gets built. The person who designed it signs off on the field work.

What a Legacy Master Plan Actually Covers

Hardscape Layout

Pavers, travertine, custom walls, and structural elements are spec'd in the plan before installation begins, so material quantities and drainage routing are figured out at the drawing stage, not on the job site.

Desert Plant Selection

We spec plants native to the Mojave basin and water-smart alternatives that thrive without overworking your irrigation system. The right plant in the right zone doesn't need babying.

Irrigation Integration

Every planting zone gets its own irrigation demand calculated during design. We don't retrofit a drip system onto a finished yard; we build the drip irrigation layout into the plan from day one.

Drainage Engineering

Las Vegas monsoon events push standing water into backyards that weren't graded with that in mind. Our site analysis identifies low points and we design drainage routing before a single paver goes down. See our dedicated yard drainage solutions if you're already dealing with flooding.

HOA and Permit Coordination

Most Las Vegas master-planned communities require HOA architectural approval before any landscape work begins. We've navigated those submittals for homeowners across Summerlin, Southern Highlands, and MacDonald Ranch. We know what approval packages need to include.

Existing Feature Integration

If your yard already has a pool, covered patio, or hardscape elements, those stay in the plan as anchors. We design around what's working, not past it.

Local Knowledge

Why Las Vegas Landscape Design Isn't Generic

The Las Vegas Valley isn't one climate. A yard in North Las Vegas at 1,900 feet elevation sees harder winters and different soil stratification than a Henderson lot near the foothills. Summerlin's western-facing exposures bake harder in afternoon sun than east-valley lots, which changes shade structure placement and plant orientation. Caliche hardpan, which shows up across much of Clark County, can block drainage entirely if it isn't broken through during excavation. We've worked in every corner of this valley for 24 years. That's not marketing copy. It means we've hit caliche on a Boulder City site, graded for monsoon sheet flow in Enterprise, and designed HOA submittals for Anthem residents who needed approval before breaking ground. Most contractors learn these realities on your dime. We already know them. We also don't design around trends. Crushed glass and succulent walls look interesting in a magazine. They don't hold up to desert wind, UV degradation, and the specific foot-traffic patterns of a Las Vegas backyard. What we design is what will still look sharp five years from now.

What a Good Las Vegas Landscape Design Gets Right

Six things that separate a functional desert design from one that fails in year two.

  1. 01

    Drainage comes first

Every Master Plan we draw routes water before it routes plants. Grade, drainage basins, and surface material permeability are established in the site analysis phase.

  2. 02

    Material selection accounts for UV

Desert sun bleaches and warps materials that weren't specced for sustained UV exposure. We select pavers, travertine, and hardscape materials rated for Las Vegas conditions specifically.

  3. 03

Irrigation zones match plant water demand

Mixing high-water and low-water plants on the same valve line kills the low-water species and wastes water on the rest. Every plant zone gets its own irrigation demand in the Master Plan.

  4. 04

Shade structures are positioned by sun angle, not aesthetics

A pergola placed for visual balance but facing due west offers no afternoon shade in July. We position structures by compass orientation and summer sun angle.

  5. 05

HOA approval is built into the project timeline

HOA submittals in Las Vegas can take two to six weeks. If we don't account for that in the project schedule upfront, that delay falls on you mid-project.

  6. 06

The design scales to the lot, not to a template

A 5,000-square-foot east-valley lot and a 12,000-square-foot Southern Highlands lot need fundamentally different plans. We don't resize a template. We design from the actual site data.

Six Reasons Homeowners Call Legacy First

Five stars across seven Google reviews, and 24 years of Las Vegas-specific project experience behind every call.

  1. 01

    Two NV contractor licenses

License #0092251 covers landscape and irrigation; #0094033 covers masonry and concrete. That's design, hardscape, turf, and irrigation under one contractor. Most competitors hold one license and subcontract the rest.

  2. 02

Design and installation under one roof

We don't hand your approved design off to a separate crew. The same team that plans the project builds it, which means the field work matches what was drawn.

  3. 03

24 years in the Las Vegas Valley specifically

We've graded for every soil condition in Clark County, submitted HOA packages for Summerlin and Southern Highlands, and built in every microclimate this valley has. That depth doesn't come from general landscaping experience.

Landscape Design in Las Vegas: Common Questions

Is there a difference between a landscape architect and a landscape designer in Nevada?
A licensed landscape architect in Nevada carries a state architecture license and can stamp plans for public or commercial projects requiring engineered drawings. A landscape designer, which is what we operate as under NV license #0092251, handles residential design and installation without that engineering stamp. For most Las Vegas residential projects, a landscape designer is the correct scope. Projects involving structural retaining walls over a certain height or public right-of-way may require an architect's stamp, and we'll tell you upfront if your project crosses that threshold.
How long does a landscape design project take from concept to installation in Las Vegas?
For a standard residential backyard, plan on two to four weeks for the design and approval phase, plus two to six weeks for HOA submission if your community requires it. Installation timelines vary by scope: a paver patio with turf and drip irrigation on a 5,000-square-foot lot typically runs five to ten working days in the field. We build the HOA review window into the project schedule at the start so it doesn't stall you mid-project.
Do you handle HOA approvals and permits for Las Vegas landscape projects?
Yes. We've prepared and submitted HOA architectural approval packages for communities across Summerlin, Southern Highlands, MacDonald Ranch, and Anthem. Most HOAs require a site plan, material callouts, and plant lists formatted to their specific template. We know what those packages need to include and we manage the submission process. We don't design a yard and then leave you to figure out the approval process on your own.
What plants actually hold up in Las Vegas's desert climate with minimal water?
Mojave-native species like desert willow, palo verde, and brittlebush perform well across valley elevations. For structure, we frequently spec Texas sage, agave, and red yucca, which tolerate the UV intensity and reflected heat off hardscape surfaces. We don't spec plants that look good in a nursery but require six weeks of establishment watering you'll forget to do in July. Every plant in a Legacy plan is chosen for the specific microclimate zone of that lot.
Can you design around my existing pool or patio structure?
Yes, and that's actually the more common scenario. Most Las Vegas homeowners calling us have an existing pool deck, covered patio, or wall structure they want to keep. We treat those features as fixed anchors in the site plan and design the new elements around them, ensuring hardscape materials and plant placement complement what's already there. We don't tear out functional structures to start from scratch unless there's a structural reason to.
How does caliche soil affect a landscape design in Las Vegas?
Caliche is a calcium carbonate hardpan layer found across most of Clark County, typically six to eighteen inches below the surface. It doesn't drain, it doesn't accept deep root systems, and if it's not addressed during excavation, it will redirect water laterally and create pooling issues. We identify caliche presence during site analysis and break through it in the zones where drainage and deep-rooted plants are planned. Skipping that step is one of the most common reasons Las Vegas landscaping fails in years two and three.
